BACKGROUND

Society is going through a crisis of imagination & a crisis of hope, that are directly linked to the climate crisis (and the further crisis that are born from this). The times we are going through, where we get to see devastating images of destruction, violence, oppression, occupation and environmental disasters, filmed in real-time and directly transmitted to our phones, are harrowing. These contribute to a sense of hopelessness for a future that seems more and more dystopian and uncertain.

Scientists have coined the word eco-emotions (also known as eco-anxiety and climate-anxiety) to describe the constelation of emotions emerging from the climate crisis, the siming inaction from decitionmakers, and the state of the world. The research shows that while these emotions behave very similarly to depression and anxiety, they cannot be treated the same way. One common denominator that makes these emotions experienced more strongly, is the sence of isolation, of believing we are the only ones experiencing them. Therefore a great way to learn to manage these is to share the emotions, where they stem from and how they show up in our lives.

PROJECT

Through immersive workshop experiences we invite participants to connect with their emotions for the future in a safe, supportive, imaginative and playful way. We designed a structure, similar to Joanna Macy’s spiral from the Work That Reconnects, but informed by psychology and imagination methods, to take participants on a journey to recognise the emotional baggage they carry, then connect to the longing they have for the world, imagine a vision of the future they long for, co-create a shared vision to understand how, what they long for is not that hard to create.
Through this process we aim to build agency and hope for the future in the participants of the workshop. The premise behind this is that we cannot create what we cannot imagine.

The project is still ongoing and we aim it to be a multi-year project where we build different connections and collaborations with practitioners that are also interested in this field and have had similar thoughts.
